A Typical Day at Carolina House

A Typical Day at Carolina House

A typical day at Carolina House varies depending on the needs of the individual patient. Most days begin around 6:30 a.m. when patients meet with one of our caring 24-hour nursing staff to assess vital signs and address any medical concerns. After breakfast, which is prepared by the patient with supervision, residents who have received clearance from our medical and clinical teams may take a walk near the 10 acres of forest surrounding our farmhouse or engage in another approved activity.

Residents then begin a full day of individual and group therapies, lectures, activities and meetings. In addition to individual and family therapy sessions, residents participate in a wide range of therapy groups addressing such topics as body image, coping skills, interpersonal effectiveness, spirituality and many others. In order to assist the recovery and healing process, patients have one hour of nap/rest time daily.

Once a week, patients go on a restaurant outing where they have lunch as a group. At Carolina House, patients prepare and eat meals together with supervision, often using fresh ingredients from their own garden. In culinary group, which is led by our full-time chef, patients also learn how to grocery shop and prepare meals according to their nutritionist-prescribed meal plan.

On weekends, after a morning therapy group, residents enjoy supervised group outings to nearby attractions and other leisure activities. Visiting hours are on Sunday afternoons, and we make every effort to accommodate patients’ diverse religious practices.

In the evenings, patients have free time to talk on the phone, attend meetings, engage in social interaction, or learn how to relax and sit quietly with themselves. By 9:30 p.m., residents return to their comfortable rooms to read, journal and go to sleep. A full night’s sleep prepares the women for another day of personal growth and healing.

Therapy Groups

  • This group creates a safe, structured environment for women to practice healthier ways of relating to others. Residents share their feelings, give and receive feedback, and offer support.

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy is integrated into every aspect of treatment at Carolina House. Residents receive instruction and practice using the four DBT skill sets – mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance and interpersonal effectiveness – in order to more effectively manage their emotions and relationships.
  • Twice a week patients have the opportunity to express themselves through art therapy. In a supportive environment, women use various forms of art to explore their feelings and manage stress.

  • After meals, the residents sit down with our staff to discuss any guilt, shame, anger or other feelings surrounding food.

  • Patients discuss the sources of a negative body image and identify ways to challenge distorted thought and behavior patterns.

  • Patients receive a thorough nutrition assessment and unique nutrition plan from our registered dietician. The goal is to help women be mindful of their body’s cues and re-establish a healthy relationship with food.
  • In a group setting, women discuss the role spirituality plays in their lives and explore the ways in which their belief system can further their recovery.

  • The goal of this group is to help residents recognize their body’s internal cues. Through education and the practice of yoga, women learn how to make conscious choices that promote self-esteem and good health.

  • Our experienced, full-time chef helps women develop a healthy relationship with food by learning how to grocery shop and plan and prepare nutritious meals.

  • Residents gather to wrap up the day, discuss any issues facing the group, set goals and discuss plans for the next day.

Outings & Activities

  • Patients connect with the community through supervised group outings and activities such as trips to nearby attractions and movies.

  • Once a week, patients go on a supervised restaurant outing where they have lunch and discuss their feelings around food.
  • Residents who have received clearance from our medical and clinical teams take a walk or engage in some other form of physical activity. A favorite class among residents is Shake Your SoulŪ, which combines body-oriented therapy with elements of yoga, Qi Kung, creative dance and African dance. The class is designed to build a positive self-image and facilitate creative expression.

  • In their free time, residents are able to read, journal, talk on the phone, attend meetings, and learn how to relax and simply sit quietly with themselves.
