We seek to treat the whole person, and promote the development of strong, life-long emotional and behavioral skills that honor a person's unique situation and needs. Carolina House utilizes an approach that values a patient's complete life, including family, community, culture, value systems, spiritual traditions, and integration within the larger world. The relationships we form with our patients are founded on dignity and respect, with an understanding and appreciation of the role that an eating disorder has played in their lives.

Every individual has the capacity to live a fully empowered life, and to make effective choices for optimal physical, emotional, cognitive and spiritual health. We believe people can attain freedom from habitual, self-defeating behaviors that so often take the form of disordered eating patterns. Carolina House provides an environment where experienced staff encourage healing through awareness of one's relationship with self, with others, and with the environment. We seek to increase quality of life through the provision of mindfulness-based treatment, facilitating reconnection with the core self and promoting healing from self-defeating behavioral patterns and compromised physical health.

The goal of Carolina House is to provide a beautiful, safe, and nurturing environment with highly trained and supportive staff using a structured, multi-faceted treatment approach. Utilizing this structure, patients examine their current beliefs, worldviews, and core values for increased awareness of the dynamics of their eating disordered behaviors. This vital awareness empowers patients to incorporate effective coping skills that will enable them to choose more effective beliefs and behavior patterns. Upon completion of treatment at Carolina House, patients will have the awareness and tools to significantly improve their daily functioning, maintain health through optimal nutrition, and thrive with a greatly enriched quality of life.

Carolina House has an ongoing commitment to evidence-based practice in the treatment of eating disorders.  With a vested interest in an expanding eating disorder research base, Carolina House participates in a number of research studies and outcome measures.  Presently, Carolina House is collaborating with the Duke University Eating Disorders Program and researcher Nancy Zucker, PhD in an exciting new research study to benefit women with anorexia nervosa. This study offers clinical staff valuable information about social discomfort in women with eating disorders.  The data, presented to both the patient and clinical staff, can appropriately guide treatment decisions at Carolina House as well as inform future directions for therapeutic work.
